Mount Sequoyah was called East Mountain until 1922. That year the city gave land to the Methodist Church for a summer retreat, and the mountain was renamed for the Cherokee leader Sequoyah, per the Encyclopedia of Arkansas. Most of the retreat's buildings went up between 1927 and 1965, per Mount Sequoyah. Since 2016 the campus has been run by an independent nonprofit. It is still a retreat center, with an overlook, a public pool, trails, two art galleries and local artist studios.
